What is the Makers Matinee? (And more frequently asked questions)

Writer's picture: Jillian WaltherJillian Walther

This Sunday, January 19, we have a very exciting event coming up: The Makers Matinee! This is the first event of its kind in our area, so we wanted to share some important info, to make sure everyone will be ready to enjoy this awesome event!

What is the Makers Matinee?

The Makers Matinee is a moviegoing experience geared towards the crafting community. We are going to show a movie at a theater, but leave the lights partially on, so that attendees can work on a craft at the same time! Moviegoers are encouraged to bring a craft to work on, get to know other crafters, and enjoy a classic rom-com!

Where is the Makers Matinee taking place?

At the Princess Theatre, in Downtown Harriman, TN. Harriman is charming little town located between Knoxville and Crossville. The Princess Theatre is Harriman's local theatre that has been restored to its original art deco glory! We are so excited to be able to watch a movie in this very unique setting.

The Princess's address is: 421 North Roane Street, Harriman, TN 37748

You can learn more about the Princess and other upcoming events here: https://www.princessharriman.org/

What movie are we watching?

Sleepless in Seattle, a 1993 film starring Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan. This is a classic, cozy rom-com to get through the winter blues! Watch the trailer here.

What time does the movie start?

Doors to this event will open at 1 PM EST. We will have a few craft demonstrations in the lobby, as well as finished projects on from local makers on display. Come early to learn about fiber arts in our community!

The movie will start at 2 PM EST. Unlike typical movie showings, there are no commercials or trailers, so plan to be in your seat by 2 PM!

How can I participate?

You must buy a ticket before the movie. Tickets are available online through WaltherHandmade.com

You can also stop by Walther Handmade this week and buy tickets in person or call the shop at 865-432-1044 to buy tickets over the phone. The shop is open 10-4 Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday, and 10-7 on Thursday.

How much are tickets?

Tickets are $5 if purchased before Sunday.

Do I need to bring my ticket with me?

Yes! You can print your ticket out or show it on your phone/device. We will be scanning tickets at the door.

I forgot to get a ticket! Can I still come?

Attendees must purchase tickets to participate in this event. To help with logistics and make sure the event runs smoothly, we are asking everyone to buy tickets online before the event.

If, for some reason, you are not able to purchase a ticket beforehand, you can purchase tickets at the door. Tickets at the door will be $6, CASH ONLY.

Can I reserve a certain seat?

There is no reserved seating. If you are coming with a group of friends or hoping to sit in a particular area, then plan to come early to get your seats!

Do I need to bring a craft with me? Or will a project be provided?

Crafters are responsible for bringing their own craft projects to work on.

What sort of craft can I bring?

All crafts are welcome, as long as you can carry it with you and fit it in your theater seat! You will not be allowed to set up tables, use electronic appliances, or spread your project over multiple seats. Please also avoid bringing projects that might damage theater property or create a lot of dust or noisy distraction, like painting or woodworking.

Just like visiting a national park, let's leave the Princess better than when we arrived. Plan to clean up any craft messes made during the movie.

Oh no! I forgot my project! Is there a place I can go buy yarn?

Walther Handmade will be open 10-12 on Sunday, for any last minute craft-shopping needs!

How will I be able to see my project?

We will leave the lights partially on, so that crafters don't miss a stitch!

I'm not crafty. Can I still come?

Yes! This event is open to the public!

Maybe you'll be inspired to take up a new craft after spending time surrounded by so many makers 😉

Even if you do not plan on bringing a craft, you will still need to purchase a ticket.

Will there be food available?

To help support our host, the Princess Theatre, outside food/drink will not be allowed. There will be concessions available, such as popcorn and candy. Concessions are cash only.

Where can I park?

There is street parking available on Roane Street and the intersecting streets at no cost. There are also a couple of public parking lots in Downtown Harriman where you can park at no cost.

Where is a good place to eat before or after the movie?

Downtown Harriman has several dining options that are open on Sundays, and several are within walking distance of the Princess.

Who do I contact with more questions?

You can reach out to Jillian at Walther Handmade by sending an email to Hello@Waltherhandmade.com or calling the shop at 865-432-1044!

Thank you everyone! Now go get your movie tickets, gather up your yarn, and come make with us at the Makers Matinee!
